Red Dots No Red Lines: Mouneer Alshaarani Design Retrospective
Sharjah Gallery, AUC, Egypt - 2018
Mouneer Alshaarani, one of the most acknowledged and acclaimed contemporary calligraphers and script designers in the Arab world, as he has taken the task of reviving and developing the heavy ethical and cultural heritage of Arabic script. His constant research has led him to his own hallmark style, beyond the stagnancy of calligraphic imitations.
This exhibition was dedicated to document the oeuvre of Syrian Mouneer Alshaarani, one of the most acknowledged and acclaimed contemporary calligraphers and script designers in the Arab world, based on primary research through personal and private archives in Cairo and Beirut.
The exhibition focused on highlighting his multifarious contributions to graphic design, since the majority of his designs were either unsigned or published under the pseudo name “Emad Halim” he used in exile due to and social activism.
“Red Lines Red Dots” Design Retrospective showcased Alshaarani’s work since the 1970s until present time, highlighting his creative process, and stopping at significant stations that influenced his ideologies and shaped the body of his work.
A short documentary that I directed interviewing Alshaarani was on display in the exhibition.
A designer’s talk and book signing event was organized on February 19th, 2018.
